TEA TREE OIL

Tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a multi-purpose herb and has a long history of medicinal use. Tea tree oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea tree oil is purported to have antiseptic properties, and has been used traditionally to prevent and treat infections. Tea tree oil is a truly amazing essential oil. It is antiseptic, antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal. Tea tree oil is an effective immune stimulant. It is a mild pain reliever - analgesic - when applied to a fresh wound or minor burn.

Tea tree oil is purported to have antiseptic properties, and has been used traditionally to prevent and treat infections. Tea tree oil's properties are contained in the oils of its leaves. The oil is steam distilled from the leaves and then tested for chemical properties, which can number between 50 and 100. This may explain tea tree oil's many beneficial uses. The main active components are terpinen-4-ol, 1,8-cineole, gamma-terpinene, p-cymene and other turpenes. Its aroma is one of a healthy pleasant disinfectant. The oil contains numerous chemicals known as terpenoids. Another compound, cineole, should make up less than 15% and preferably 2.5% of the oil.

Today, tea tree oil is used as a topical disinfectant and antiseptic for burns and cuts. It can also be used as an oral antiseptic rinse. SIDE EFFECTS OF TEA TREE OIL

No side effects are reported when used as prescribed. Although in some cases when used on the skin, tea tree oil may cause allergic rash, redness, blistering, and itching. Use of tea tree oil inside of the mouth or eyes can cause irritation.
